Jopen Brewery was founded as a company in 1994, as part of the celebration of Haarlem’s 750th anniversary. While the company itself is relatively young, Jopen’s brewing wisdom is rooted in the early 1400s. Their first beer, Koyt, was recreated from a gruit beer recipe dating back to 1407, discovered in the Haarlem city archives. This recipe marked the beginning of Jopen’s mission: to bring historical brewing techniques into the modern age.
The Jopenkerk brewery, located in a restored church in Haarlem, is more than just a production facility; it’s a symbol of the brewery’s commitment to authenticity and excellence.
Over the past three decades, Jopen has become a standout in the global craft beer scene, receiving prestigious accolades including World Beer Awards, Dutch Beer Challenge titles, and European Beer Star medals. Their beers, such as the beloved Mooie Nel IPA and a range of innovative barrel-aged releases, reflect a philosophy that honors tradition while embracing experimentation.
